Situated just under 3 hours North of Perth, Green Head is a small and laid-back town, perfect for exploring the outdoors! With hundreds of activities to do, whether your windsurfing on the beach, fishing off the jetty or gazing at the psychedelic wildflowers, you won’t run out things to do in this remote town!
The coast of Green Head was traversed on multiple occasions during the 1600’s with Dutch sailors travelling through here to trade with Indonesia. Inland development and settlement only started occurring in 1946 with the development of camping reserves. The popularity of these campsites steadily grew throughout the 50’ and 60’ with the land soon being surveyed and eventually gazzeted in 1966. The area was named Green Head after a nearby headland, which in turn was named by Staff-Commander William Edwin Archdeacon R.N. Today Green Head is a small town, serving as an outlet to many adventurous activities!
Green Head is renowned for its water activities! In fact, this town is home to Dynamite Beach, which was named 19th in the top 100 beaches in the whole of Australia in 2017! It’s easy to see why with its calm water, great snorkelling and being sheltered from the strong coastal winds. Surfing is also popular at Point Louise and windsurfers and kite surfers can be seen flying through the pristine water at Little Anchorage Bay. Beach fishing often occurs in this area, with whiting, herring, tailor, skippy and cobbler often being reeled in! Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts will also enjoy the calm water on the offshore reefs of Green Head, with diverse marine environments leading to some unforgettable experiences!
Not much of a water baby? Well no worries! Green Head is home to some wonderful sights on the mainland! Bushwalking can be done through the numerous trails in Lesueur National Park and Alexander Morrison National Park. During Spring, these bushwalks are made even more special through the blooming of the wildflowers creating a kaleidoscope of colours! Within Green Head itself, the 3 Bays Walk is a 2.5km walkway taking you through, as the name suggests, three bays; Dynamite Bay, South Bay and Anchorage Bay. Along this walk you’ve got the opportunity to learn the Aboriginal and European history of this small town as well its surrounding areas. 4-wheel driving tracks are also found throughout Green Head as well as an opportunity to tee off at the local 18-hole golf course!
